Scents of Worship

  • 5,000 years if history in a bottle!  When studying the history of perfumery, one will realize that perhaps the only phenomenon that every religion could agree upon is the role of fragrance in spirituality.

In a world where we find many things that divide us–race, religion, color, language–Scents OF Worship is a reminder of the unifying scents IN worship.

  • 5,000 years ago, the first perfumes were aromatics kindled as incense to gods and ancestors. It was believed that their scent was pleasing to the gods.

“Two of ancient Egypt’s best-known incense resins were frankincense and myrrh.  Their Arabian varieties were presented to the infant Jesus by the legendary Magi.

Spikenard comes from the root of the Indian plant Nardostachys jatamansi.  It was used most famously by Mary Magdalene to perfume the feet of Jesus.

The Bible is a wonderful record of the imported and native scents that were favored in the ancient Near East.  Specifically, the Song of Solomon ranks amongst the greatest of the world’s aromatic verses.

The Hebrews also imported frankincense, cinnamon, and balsam, and they grew their own fragrant myrtle.

The Japanese burned incense in their temples. In ancient China, the incense burner was central to the "five precious things" arranged on the altar.

The Islamic world has always appreciated the beauty of scent.  A host of pharmacists, chemists, distillers, and medical writers flourished in the classical period of Islamic science.  Two of the most famous were Jabir bin Hayyan who left an encyclopedia and Ar-Razi who recorded experiments in distillation.  Of all the perfumery scents, the most prevalent was rose.”

The above information has been extracted from the book “Scents of Time” by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I have since childhood loved the scents of a temple - the fragrant roses and magnolias, agarbattis wafting aromas of sandalwood, water scented with tulsi leaves, and my personal favorite, prasad made from coconut, jaggery and sugar! The auspiciousness of the surroundings is uplifted by fragrant flowers, sweets, and incense.
